Kanban, bin, and work-order labels — in color
Lean methodology already speaks green (run), yellow (hold), red (stop). Color e-paper finally lets the plant floor read status the way people already think about it, without printing and re-printing paper labels every shift. Battery-powered, MES-integrated, reusable across thousands of parts.
Why not just print paper labels?: Because paper is a hidden operational tax. Every reprint is a Kanban-card walk, a printer queue, a wrong-part risk, and a bin-swap error. A reusable e-label that pulls its content from MES or ERP eliminates the walk and the reprint. Color makes the status readable across an aisle.
What we build
- Reusable bin labels — 4″ and 5.9″ Spectra 6, in a wipe-clean housing. Attach to totes and gaylords. Content pulls from your WMS on each pick.
- Kanban cards — 5.9″ or 7.3″ Spectra 6. Color status reflects real MES state, not a physical card someone forgot to move.
- Work-order travelers — 7.3″ Spectra 6 in an IP-rated housing. Survives wash-down and the occasional forklift. QR / barcode / NFC for scan-in.
- Integration — REST, MQTT, OPC-UA, or direct SAP / Oracle / NetSuite bridges. If your MES / ERP has an API, our firmware will pull from it.
Why color changes the workflow, not just the label
Lean visual-management systems already assign meaning to colors — it’s baked into every 5S and TPM training deck for the last forty years. Monochrome e-labels forced factories to encode status in text or in physical hardware (magnets, flags, colored holders). Color e-paper collapses the two: the label isthe status indicator, and the status can change from a MES event without a human touching anything.
Practical result: pick errors and misread-status incidents drop. We’ve seen 30-50% reductions in mispicks in the first quarter of deployment, though your mileage will depend hard on your current baseline.
What the stack looks like
Hardware
ESP32-S3 or ESP32-C6 module (C6 for Thread / 802.15.4 mesh in RF-noisy plants). Good Display GDEP059E01 (5.9″) or GDEP073E01 (7.3″). LiFePO4 cell for temperature range, or rechargeable Li-ion for controlled environments. IP54 to IP67 housings depending on wash-down needs.
Firmware
Wake-on-event over Wi-Fi or mesh, deep-sleep otherwise. Store-and-forward for lost connectivity. On-device state machine so a label stays legible even if the backend is down. OTA over the plant network with staged rollout.
Cloud
Fleet dashboard scoped by plant, line, and cell. MES/ERP bridge library that ships with SAP and Oracle adapters out of the box; custom adapters for anything else. Alerting when a label hasn’t phoned home or a battery dips below threshold.
What it costs, roughly
- Pilot — $25-40k NRE, 50 units on stock reference hardware in an IP-rated housing, one MES/ERP integration. 6-8 weeks.
- Rollout — $60-120k NRE, 500-2,000 units on custom hardware, multi-plant deployment. 12-16 weeks.
- Unit cost at 500-5k volume — $50-140 per unit depending on size and housing.
